Accessibility

Dear audience

— From 2021 to 2024 we were one of three theatres in North Rhine-Westphalia to participate in the pilot project Access Maker run by the association Un-Label. With its support we developed new concepts for innovative cultural provision that minimises barriers. We will continue to work in future with experts with and without disabilities to make our theatre building and programme increasingly inclusive and as accessible as possible. Please take note of the information about performances with surtitles, audio description, touch tours, sign language and the relaxed performances in the diary of our printed monthly schedule.

Approach

All ÖPNV public transport stops near the venue offer exits at ground level and accessible lifts (with the single exception of Jacobistraße). The route from the stops to the venues is step-free and no further than a few hundred metres.

Parking spaces

Disabled parking spaces can be found close to all venues.

Access

All our venues have ground level access and have accessible toilets and lifts (except the Studio at the Junges Schauspiel).

Doors

In the Großes and Kleines Haus at the Schauspielhaus the outer doors marked with wheelchair symbols open automatically.

Wheelchair Spaces

Wheelchair spaces can be booked through our webshop subject to availability.

Guide Dogs

We welcome guide dogs. All aisle seats in our auditoria are guide dog compatible.

Audio description (AD) and touch tours

Audio description makes selected productions accessible to blind and severely visually impaired people. What can be seen on stage is described by a voice artist through headphones, providing important information about the plot, the stage design and the costumes. The Junges Schauspiel also produces productions with integrated artist-based audio description. Touch tables and on-stage tours enable visitors to find out about the staging and spaces in advance.

German Sign Language (DGS)

Sign language interpreters translate the dialogue on stage for deaf and hearing-impaired people in the audience. At the Schauspielhaus productions in the Main House are interpreted on selected dates. At the Junges Schauspiel deaf and hearing performers appear together on stage for the first time in the first inclusive production »Time to Shine«.

Warnings on content and sensory stimuli

Some productions contain language, themes or representations that may seem hurtful. Sensory stimuli, e.g. stroboscopic light may also affect people with pre-existing conditions. We therefore issue appropriate warnings to works of this kind.

Audio Loop

In the Main House there is an audio loop from row 4 (for plays with an orchestra pit, from row 8). These enable you to hear the on-stage sound amplified using a compatible hearing device. From the beginning of the 2024/2025 season, we will expand this service: in future you will be able to relay the stage sound in the Main and Small Houses to your Bluetooth-enabled hearing aid using your smartphone. To do this during your visit, link your smartphone via wifi to Sennheiser’s MobileConnect system. If you do not have a compatible smartphone, we offer devices with an audio loop worn round the neck or headphones. Our staff will be happy to offer technical help.

Relaxed Performances (RP)

For people who find lighting stimuli, noises or confined spaces disturbing, relaxed performances at the Junges Schauspiel offer the chance to visit the theatre in an unpressured atmosphere.

Surtitles

We stage performances in the Schauspielhaus primarily with English, but also with Ukrainian and Japanese surtitles so that international guests and people who do not speak German well also have the opportunity to go to the theatre.
